Nikon D5200 pictures and hands-on

Nikon has not only gone DSLR crazy this year, but also megapixel mad. And we mean that in a good way. The latest Nikon D5200 model - which Pocket-lint was on hand to try out at a pre-launch event - features a brand new 24-megapixel APS-C sensor at its core.

Nikon unveils 24.1MP D5200 DSLR with optional Wi-Fi

Nikon has announced the D5200 - an upper entry-level DSLR that improves on the D5100 by offering a 24MP CMOS sensor, 1080i60 movie capability, a side-articulated 921K dot 3.0" tilt/swivel LCD and new processing filters. Interestingly, the D5200 is equipped with a significantly upgraded AF system, based around the same Multi-Cam 4800DX AF sensor that is used in the D7000, and the same 2016-pixel RGB metering sensor. The D5200 is also compatible with Nikon's optional WU-1a WiFi module. Pricing and availability has yet to be confirmed, and Nikon has yet to officially announce the D5200 in the US.

Nikon reveals D5200 SLR with D7000-taunting specs: 24MP sensor, 39-point AF, wireless port (hands-on)

The trusty D5100 and D7000 have held sway over Nikon's low-to-mid DSLR range for around 18 months now, but come December and there'll be a new option driving a wedge right between them. The D5200 will still fulfill the role of a lightweight "advanced beginner" model and physically it's the spitting image of the D5100, but at the same time it brings some fundamental and distinctly D7000-like photographic improvements to try to excuse its £720 (body-only) recommended retail price. (Update: that equates to around $1,150, but Nikon tells us that there's no official US pricing or arrival date at this time.)
